Inventing a new narrative: refugees as creators

Client: REF-FM Foundation
Location: Kakuma, Kenya

Context

REF-FM supports community radio stations run by refugees in Kakuma. Their model is simple: refugees are not just audiences - they are content creators shaping their own narratives.

Challenge

REF-FM needed compelling content to support fundraising and partnerships, while shifting perception from refugees as beneficiaries to refugees as creators.

Approach

The Good Picture produced a series of video assets focused on stories told by refugee journalists, hosts, and producers. The aim was to highlight skills, agency, and real-life impact through authentic, on-the-ground storytelling.

Impact

  • Stronger, more human storytelling

  • Clearer positioning of REF-FM’s model

  • A shift in perception, from aid to empowerment
