"And Nutrition For All..."
Elevating Nutrition on the Global Climate Agenda at COP28
In 2023, while working for the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement, two of our managing partners led a groundbreaking global advocacy and communication effort with an ambitious objective:

Break down the silos between the climate and nutrition agendas and secure nutrition as a formal priority at COP28.

At the time, nutrition and climate were evolving in separate spheres, despite food systems being responsible for over one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions, and malnutrition remaining one of the leading killers of children under five. This disconnect weakened policy responses and limited funding for the most vulnerable.

Their work helped change that trajectory.

Starting more than a year before COP28, they launched a strategic diplomatic and communication push that included:

-
High-level political engagement with 60+ governments
-
Development of a compelling narrative linking planetary and human health
-
Production and global dissemination of cutting-edge communication tools
-
Mobilisation of influential voices, including the WHO Director-General
-
Social media and digital campaigns activating civil society and youth movements
-
Coordination of global nutrition partners to align influence and advocacy

A key milestone was securing the first-ever ministerial-level side event on nutrition at a COP, creating a historic political platform and driving commitments from governments and global leaders.
Their sustained advocacy and coalition-building contributed to a landmark outcome:
for the first time in COP history, the final agreement text included the phrase
“…and nutrition for all.”

A short sentence with significant implications, anchoring nutrition within global climate policy, strengthening political leverage for countries, and opening the door to greater international financing for climate-nutrition action.
